Her desire to help women shine with confidence for the ‘red-carpet’ moments in their lives has seen Lillybeth Melmoth become a mentor and lifesaver to countless Bay women.
Her mobile company, Lillybeth: A Beautiful Education, offers professional makeup application and hands-on lessons – and the effect of feeling beautiful has been “life-changing” for some of her clients.
“My Kiwi-style advice helps liberate busy women from the tyrannies of the cosmetics industry with its trends and unrealistic techniques that only work for 17 year-old models with unlimited time and money,” Lillybeth explains.
“Women face the challenge of a lifetime sifting through conflicting, generic, misleading or biased beauty advice in the attempt to feel beautiful in their makeup.
“I also deal with brides all over the world who are getting married in the Bay of Plenty. I take the fear and hassles out of booking their hair and makeup from overseas, through myself or my team of reliable wedding makeup and hair stylists.”
Having dealt with acne skin herself from the age of nine, and her own “personal love/hate relationship with makeup”, Lillybeth decided to launch her business in 2008 when she needed a new challenge.
“I was designated to be the fulltime caregiver of my husband when he was overcoming some personal issues. I felt I’d go crazy if I didn’t do anything while based at home. Since I’d already started in direct sales with a cosmetics company one year prior, I had the idea to go independent with my own brand of paid makeup lessons to give Kiwi women unbiased advice, not exclusive to any one brand, so there’d be no pressure to purchase product.”
Lillybeth was born and raised in Tauranga, so it was a natural decision to base her business here. She enjoys the low-stress lifestyle the Bay offers and has no desire to move to a bigger city just to compete with more makeup artists.
She loves running a small business because it’s so flexible and agile. “I can get a new idea and start implementing it straight away. It’s instant gratification. I also love the huge variety in my role: teaching (lessons), serving (weddings), and entertaining (face painting). I get to use some of my more unique talents to boost confidence and help my customers get more enjoyment and satisfaction from life.”
Along the way she’s learned that focus, systems and processes are important to channel her enthusiasm into the right growth areas of her business. It also ensures she doesn’t lose money because the old-fashioned basics of business are missing such as good accounting, lead follow-up and customer care.
As a follower of Jesus, Lillybeth says the best advice she’s ever received comes from her favourite childhood book which paraphrases Proverbs 16:3 from the Bible. “Give all your plans to God, child. Ask him to make you strong. Ask him to bless each thing you do and then you can’t go wrong.”
Lillybeth says her future business aspirations include working more closely with individual women in private lessons. “I’ve just started offering a 12-month Lillybeth membership for women to experience ALL my makeup services spread over a year. I am also growing my Lillybeth team of hair and makeup artists and have recently opened up our trainings to young women considering makeup as a career.”
